Summary

Fenland fieldwalking here in 1983 recovered a scatter of early post medieval pottery, brick, shell and bone from the top of an artificial earthen bank. Subsequent metal detecting during 1987-2004 retrieved a number of metal objects including a Byzantine silver coin, an oval medieval seal matrix, a late medieval coin weight, a 16th century hooked fastener and several medieval pilgrim badges including one depicting St Blaise.

12 February 1983. Area approximately 30m north-to-south x 20m east-to-west with very quick fall-off of material on both sides bank, explained probably by fact that until recently this was under orchard. About 2.4m (8ft) OD.
Scatter of early post medieval? Pottery with brick, shell, bone etc on top of a bank (deliberately raised?) adjacent to road.

Byzantine silver coin (Venetian soldino? - A. Rogerson (NAU).)
Halfpenny Henry VI 'also two pennies about the same period'.
One lead seal matrix oval shape 13th century.
Various brass.
Several jettons, two early 13th-14th century, rest 16th century.
Three coins copper William and Mary.
Lots of pottery 15th-16th century, some earlier and piece of Samian.

Square coin weight, copper alloy, with bevelled edges. Plain reverse, illegible obverse. Weight 4.68g. Possibly late medieval.

16th century dress fastener/hooked tag. Trapezoidal loop, lozengiform plate with pelleted border and tiny quatrefoil in centre.
