Full Description
Interesting timber frame, with massive but roughly cut posts. Sillbeam, wallplate and studs. Straight braces, apparently originally in each corner of each of the two bays divided by a central stack (obscured by decorations). At southwest corner a mortise in a stud (now on upper floor) as if for an arched brace, but no corresponding mortise in wallplate. Perhaps a reused timber. Chimney retains original fireplace on west. Apparently 17th century, just possibly late 16th century. Originally two simple open rooms. An upper floor has been inserted (in 19th century?) and roof raised, by adding crude timber framed walls on top of wallplate, with straight braces all angled in same direction! Possibly there may have been attics originally. An assembly number may be seen at north-east end of house on former wallplate now where used as window sill.
House regrettably clad in brick (modern, 'seconds'), by former owner.
NB. 'Priesthole' found by surveyor is simply where the original passage by the stack was blocked to put the stairs in.
E. Rose (NAU), 29 September 1982.
