Earthworks of rectangular banked enclosure, approximately 90m by 70m, visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1) and Ordnane Survey aerial photographs from 1972 (S2).
The banks are all around 4.5m wide. This is consistent with the plan produced of the site (see file). In addition to that surveyed, the northern bank appears to be flanked by an outer ditch, 3m wide. There also appears to be two very slight inner banks, approximately 25m apart, which divides the enclosure into three areas, roughly equal in size. The inner banks either abut up to or stop just short of the outer, slightly higher, banks. It is not really possible to see these internal subdivisions or the ditch on later photos, or according to the field visit and survey, nor are they visible on the ground. This suggests that they have been levelled for some reason, although this seems unlikely as the rest of the banks remain. It is probably the case that these banks are so slight that have now become completely masked by vegetation.
This enclosure has been interpreted as an animal pound and these internal divisions may relate to the separation of stock. The whole enclosure is cut by a post medieval park road; see NHER 30464 for discussion of date of this route way. This suggests that the enclosure it is likely to be pre-park in date, probably a medieval structure.
S. Massey (NMP), 6 July 2001.
