Summary

The possible course of a causewayed road crossing low marshy ground as far as the castle (NHER 3455), and possibly passing under it, though this is the subject of some discussion. In any event, it seems the road pre-dates the castle, and pottery finds along its path indicate a Roman date.

Map

1969. Source [1] reports a causeway crossing low marshy ground as far as castle; then visible crossing bailey in alignment with village street. Pre-castle road? The bailey section is just visible on ground, and is apparently marked on Bulwer's sketch map of 1830 (see NHER 3455). Are the two sections part of the same feature? Visible on RAF
aerial photographs.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU),15 July 1975.

At 6580 1167 (3463/context 1) source [1] reports in 1976 remains of timber and metalling, and Roman coarseware sherds, in side of dyke where line of causeway crosses it. Information from (S1).
E. Rose (NAU).

16 December 1986. Visit.
Seems a reasonable interpretation.
Can be traced across pasture field in valley bottom between upland and Wormegay island. Course broken up in places, elsewhere still 1m high and spread to 12m wide, made of gravel.
R. J. Silvester (NAU), 16 December 1986.

10 December 1991. NLA air photography.
Causeway of Roman road, approaching and beneath motte & bailey.
D. Edwards (NAU).

However see earthwork survey of castle under NHER 3455 which does not accept that bank across bailey is part of road.
