Map

(S1) notes this as an example of a hall parallel to the street but lying some 30m (100 feet) from the present line of the street, and presumably entered through a courtyard. Only a part of the brick side walls remained but the north gable wall showed traces of a floor 1.8m (6 feet) above ground which may have raised the hall on an unexcavated undercroft. The undercroft door opening with bull-nosed brick jambs has survived. The evidence for medieval use of this building is inconclusive but the possibility that it was the hall of a house is suggested by the height of the room on the undercroft which rose, undivided through two storeys. No roof timbers remained and the use of brick suggests a date no earlier than the 15th century.

Systematic observation and recovery.
The existence of a late medieval or post medieval hall parallel to the street was already known (S1).
Extensive rebuilding revealed that the brickwork seen then was a 16th/17th century casing around a medieval core. The internal dimensions of this clunch-walled building were 5.1m by 7.3m (17 feet by 24 feet) and its foundation trenches were filled with alternating bands of sand and mortar.
From these came fragments of a stoneware jug, Grimston curfew and jug, and Yorkshire jug. Sherds of mid to late 17th century tin glazed earthenware were found in one surviving patch of floor levels which butted against the 16th/17th century rewalling.
