Location

Map sheet TL78NW
Civil Parish HOCKWOLD CUM WILTON, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

Pre 1974. 'In this area' (former north bank old course Little Ouse, now area of new channel and part of its north bank).
Context 1. Fine barbed and tanged arrowhead, 2 thumb scrapers, 2 scrapers, Beaker pottery, found by [1], note on (S1).

About 1979 to 1980.
Context 2 and 3. Two finds reported in 1984 as found (Context 2) about 1979 at TL 7325 8703 and (context 3) about 1980 at TL 7325 8700, 'both near Wilton Bridge Norfolk side of boundary?' but grid references given were both by that date in centre of new river course! Presumably somewhere on the north bank is meant, which would be the approximate area of NHER 5456.
Context 2: ring headed pin, copper alloy, good condition, south twist in shaft (shaft bent) See R. Morley. Length 8.0cm (8.8 unbent) diam 1.85 cm).
Context 3: socketed copper alloy gouge, some disease, heavily encrusted. Length 7.7cm diam 2.1cm.
Both drawn.
(S2) collated from information on (S3), see file.
E. Rose (NAU) 2 July 1984.

January 1995. Stray Find.
Found by [2] at approximately TL 732 871:
1 ?Upper Palaeolithic flint blade core (finders' Coll. No. 479).
This "slipper-shaped flint artefact" was originally identified by P. Robins (NCM) as a Late Neolithic ?adze; see description and copy of drawing (S3) in file. It was subsequently re-identified by R. Jacobi (almost certainly from Robins' drawing and notes) as a potentially Upper Palaeolithic single-platform blade core. See revised description in Jacobi Archive (S4).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 24 July 2014.
