Summary

This market cross was built in 1781 to 1783 for the Earl of Orford, probably by James Wyatt. The building itself is a rotunda of unfluted Doric columns surmounted by a figure of Ceres.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Market cross. 1781-1783. By Mr Wyatt (probably James). For the Earl of Orford. Limestone; lead roof. Circular on plan. Eight unfluted Roman Doric columns set on a triple-stepped plinth support a plain entablature. Two leaded steps lead into half-round dome upon which is statue of Ceres. Dished plaster ceiling beneath dome."
