Summary

This large house dates to the late 16th century with numerous later additions including some in the 20th century by Edward Boardman. It is made from brick and flint rubble with red brick dressings and a rendered plinth on the north front. The plain tiled roof of the main range has two sets of red brick ridge chimneys. The brick and stone quoins of the original single-span range to the south are visible on the west front under added twin gables with iron numerals reading 1642. Cross wings were added to the north of the main range and these were remodelled in the 18th century and had pavilions added to the corners in the 19th and 20th centuries. The former coach house attached to the northeast of the Hall was converted to a stable in the 19th century and there is also a pentagonal donkey engine house to operate a well. The interior of the building has fine 17th and 18th century panelling along with a 17th century staircase with flat balusters and numerous contemporary fireplaces. The Hall was used as a hospital during World War Two. It survives in excellent condition and is now used as an administration centre by the University Law School.

6 October 1976. Visit by E. Rose, (NAU).
West front, flint and brick, has date 1642 in clamp irons on two straight gables, but below the gap between these is an old join marked by quoins, which must show earlier work. To north of quoins is a brick cornice also now isolated in the wall. South front, brick, is late 17th century, with Dutch gables and clusters of star-topped chimneys, also a Georgian addition and ?19th century stone porch with heraldic paintings. North front, flint and brick, is Georgian with classical dooway, recessed between two brick wings with star-topped chimneys - apparently Georgian but built in imitation of rest of house. Some old brickwork in east side. (S2) says that parts of the stables may be older than the house, but all that are there now are Georgian including one large brick barn with circular and round-headed openings. North front of house bears a Norwich fire insurance plaque. Excellent condition, used as part of university.
E. Rose (NAU), 6 October 1976.

The Dutch gables are in fact of 1910, probably same date as south porch.

By east wing a horse-drawn water-pump survives.

However a photograph at Norwich Library claiming to be taken in 1926 shows the South front without shaped gables! But A. Carter (S3) says this is impossible and the date must be wrong.

Garden walls to the south-east of Earlham Hall were separately listed Grade II in 1986. These are now recorded as NHER 64686.
