Summary

This site is marked as the Old Hall on Faden's map of 1797, but there is no evidence to suggest that this was the site of a hall. An 1827 estate map shows a marl pit on the site, which survives as an earthwork.

Civil Parish KIMBERLEY, SOUTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

(S1) marks 'Old Hall' here.
Is this a confusion with Gelham's Hall (NHER 8879)?, but note apparent avenue of trees on Ordnance Survey.
(S2) shows a small building by wood to southwest, but nothing here.
This cannot be fitted in with the sequence of Kimberley Halls, but then Gelham's does not belong to this sequence either.
Estate map of 1827, (S3), shows this site as a marlpit, with avenue continuing right across lake and park; so probably a mistake.

6 November 1980. Visited by E. Rose (NAU).
Old marl pits remain, wooded over and used by shooting club who have erected a tower.
No evidence of there ever having been a building here, though there is a wide view from this position.
