Summary

A number of finds were recovered in this area during the 1960s, including prehistoric worked flints and Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds. Some of these finds were reported at the time they were found and a number were subsequently donated to the Norwich Castle Museum. Although the majority of the worked flints were initially recorded as Neolithic, it appears that at least some are Upper Palaeolithic. There is therefore now reasonably convincing evidence for activity in this area during the Late Upper Palaeolithic as several finds found to the south have now been identified as being of this date (NHER 2840).

Map

1961. Stray Find.
Found by [1] 120 yards [110m] "west of Humbletoft" (Context 1, at [2]):
1 prehistoric flint end scraper. Information from (S1).
This object was subsequently drawn by [3] (S2). Although originally recorded as Neolithic it is clear from the drawing that this scraper was made on a fairly large, probably soft-hammer struck blade with a narrow platform. It is therefore more likely to be of Early Prehistoric date and may be Late Upper Palaeolithic. It should be noted that the grid reference noted on the drawing places this find in a field to the north of its recorded location ([4]).

1960s. Stray Find.
It is known that various worked flints were recovered in this area by [3], most (if not all) during the 1960s. The records for these discoveries are however somewhat fragmentary.

It is recorded by (S1) that a number of ?Neolithic worked flints were found at [5] (Context 2) in 1964, including "many flakes, 1 ?thumbnail scraper and 1 ?saddle quern".
Noted on (S4).
Previously recorded as NHER 2839.

According to (S1) an NCM record map records that a ?Neolithic flint core rejuvenation flake was found by [3] at [6].
Previously recorded as NHER 2870.

In 1999 the Norwich Castle Museum retrospectively accessioned a number of objects that had previously been in the collection of [3]. These finds included a number of worked flints from this area (NWHCM : 1999.328.5.5), including:
Late Upper Palaeolithic/Early Mesolithic flint blades.
Late Upper Palaeolithic to Early Neolithic flint debitage from a blade-based industry.
1 Mesolithic or later antler mattock fragment.
2 Middle Saxon pottery sherds.
Medieval pottery sherds.
Post-medieval pottery sherds.
This are listed as having been found at [7], in an area known as "Rucky Marsh"/"Rucky drift".

Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 28 August 2014.

1981.
It is likely that at least some of the above finds were amongst a collection of flints displayed in Bishop Bonner's Museum (Dereham) in 1981 that were described as "Mesolithic from Rocky Marsh, Sandy Lane". Rocky Marsh is apparently a local name for all of this area and is almost certainly the "Rucky Marsh" noted in the NCM records for the finds from this site (it is unclear which is misspelt). It is uncertain whether Mesolithic material had indeed been found or whether these were misidentified Upper Palaeolithic and/or Neolithic flints.
Originally compiled by E. Rose (NAU) and A. J. Lawson (NAU), 6 November 1981. Information from (S3).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 28 August 2014.
