Full Description
February 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of a possible clay pit associated with a previously identified kiln is visible on aerial photographs (S1). The kiln was originally recorded as NHER 6986 but had previously been changed to NHER 1009 (context 149). It has now been reinstated to its original NHER number. These remains are centred on TG 3336 3213. Vitrified brick fragments were identified at TG 3336 3215 in 1956 by J. E. Owles indicating the presence of a kiln. The pond adjacent to this kiln has previously been identified as a possible clay pit. It was originally recorded as NHER 11559, but was changed to NHER 1009 (context 153) and is now included in this record. A cropmark of a pit, with a guitar case shaped plan, is located at TG 3337 3211 (S1). It lies on a roughly west to east axis and measures 14m long by up to 8m wide. This is likely to be a clay pit associated with the kiln, but could also be a pit housing a second kiln. The date of the kiln and clay pit is unknown, but the field was called 'Kiln Close' on the 1827 enclosure map, suggesting a possible post medieval date (S4). The pond is not marked on the 1841 Witton tithe map but is shown on the first edition 6" Ordnance Survey map of the 1880s so may be of nineteenth century date (S2-3). An undated L-shaped ditch cropmark is present to its south.
