The central grid reference of this site has been altered from TG 357 138 to TG 3574 1401.
May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
This site consists of a series of undated and multiphase cropmarks located to the north of Sotshole (S2-S4). The site is centred on TG 3574 1401. Finds of prehistoric date have been found within this general area (NHER 20540). It seems likely that some components of this site are Roman in date, whilst other elements may be post medieval in date, in particular the trackway.
A sinuous trackway runs northeast from the southwestern corner of the site. The interior of the trackway appears to be compacted or surfaced as it is producing a negative cropmark. It seems likely that this is post medieval in date, although at present no map evidence can corroborate this. A small enclosed area is adjacent to the trackway.
The other main component of the site is a series of parallel linear boundaries to the north of the trackway. Again it is possible that these are post medieval in date, however it must be noted that they follow a similar alignment as the fields and boundaries associated with a small settlement of possible Roman date to the north (NHER 11726).
The remainder of the cropmarks recorded under this site consist of fragmentary rectilinear and linear ditches, which may represent fragments of former field boundaries of unknown date. A possible ring ditch, slightly oval and irregular in plan, may be located at TG 3581 1411 (S3), although it is possible that it geological in origin.
S. Massey (NMP) 23 May 2007.
It should be noted that the north-east to south-west aligned trackway running between TG 3567 1385 and TG 3575 1396 potentially relates to a short section of former road shown on Faden's map of 1797. A north-west to south-east aligned section of lost road (which formed part of the western edge of an area of common land) is also shown running through the area immediately to the north. It is possible that the adjacent, parallel north-north-west to south-south-east aligned cropmarks recorded extending southwards from Priory Road were associated with this former road. It has been noted by a member of the public [1] that a faint north-north-west to south-south-east aligned hollow can also be seen at this location on LiDAR imagery. The line of this feature appears to be continued to the north of Priority Road by a slightly more distinct hollow aligned north-east to south-west. This may also correspond with a section of former road shown on Faden's map.
