Full Description
June 1978. Stray Find.
In spoilheap of trench dug in middle of road by GPO, between TF 7190 2275 and TF 7200 2376:
1 Palaeolithic ovate flint handaxe; orange and brown flint with frost fractures. 20cm long, 12cm across. See sketch (S1) and drawing (S2).
A. Lawson (NAU), 14 January 1980. Information from (S3).
This is almost certainly the large, slightly rolled, ovate handaxe noted by Wymer on (S4) and in (S5), although in both cases an incorrect provenance is given (a trench at TF 715 232). This object is also noted in (S6) and (S7), which both repeat some of the errors in (S5).
Previously also recorded as NHER 13902.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 December 2013.
