Full Description
9 June 1980. NAU air photography.
Positive cropmarks.
Rectangular enclosure.
D. Edwards (NAU) 9 June 1982.
May 1986. In building new A11 road adjacent to south side cropmark.
Greater depth of topsoil in ditch cut on north side new road west of Cantley Stream may relate to cropmark.
J. Wymer (NAU) May 1986.
October 1990. Site visited by NARG member in advance of tree planting.
Nothing visible on ground, and site is not suitable for a moat as the soil is gravelly. It may be significant that the right
angled bend in the stream in the centre is an artificial cut with revetted sides.
E. Rose (NAU) 26 July 1991.
April 2011. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of linear ditches perhaps relating to the parish boundary, together with several possible fragmentary enclosures of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) on land that is now Hethersett Racecourse, Hethersett.
The possible parish boundary ditches run from TG 1765 0462 to TG 1789 0485, and may in fact make up the south-western side of the possible enclosure described above, which is centred on TG 1782 0482. It is difficult to be certain whether the enclosure, measuring internally at least 62m by 49m, is a discreet feature in itself or whether the two linear ditches to the northwest are coincidentally placed in relation to the parish boundary ditches.
Further fragmentary linear ditch cropmarks are also visible to the west, along with at least three further possible enclosures, centred on TG 1746 0470. These features may represent post medieval drainage features, being situated perpendicular to a former field boundary.
There are a great deal of geological marks across the field, making it harder to interpret the archaeology, but it is possible that a series of pits are also visible, in particular those centred on TG 1776 0479, to the southwest of the largest possible enclosure.
E. Bales (NMP), 13 April 2011.
