Summary

Earthworks and a flint building relating to Great Barwick deserted medieval village were reported here in the 1970s and 1980s. A visit in 1991 could find no standing earthworks. A review of aerial sources in 2025 identifed some fragmentary earthwork banks, visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs, which possibly relate to the previously recorded earthworks. These have since been levelled there appear to be no clear archaeological remains left above ground.

No archaeological features relating to the site of the medieval village of Great Barwick were identified with any certainty on the consulted sources. A few fragmentary banks, visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S3) could relate to the previously recorded earthworks, which are described above, depicted by modern Ordnance Survey mapping (S4), and described in the Historic England Research Record for the site (S5), but these are not particularly convincing and could reflect modern activity. The earthworks of several pits are visible on visualised lidar data (S6) in the field and particularly either side of the road to its north, and while it is possible that some of these also correlate with the earthworks previously recorded at the site, they are more likely to be extraction pits and consequently have not been mapped by the project. No evidence of any other earthworks surviving at the site was identified on the visualised lidar data (S6), suggesting that any archaeological earthworks have been levelled.
