Summary

Roman pottery and kiln fragments indicate the former presence of a Roman pottery kiln on this site. Objects from later periods have also been found.

May 1962. Context 2 at 7383 1055.
During sewerage excavations in garden at Marham Road. Roman sherds and animal bones found in rubbish pits at between 30cm and 60 cm, about 38cm soil overlying chalk and pit cut into this layer. Sherds, which included rusticated and colour-coated wares, ranged from ?2nd - 3rd century. A few yards further west was a lump of clay fired more heavily on its eastern side. There were other depressions in the chalk. Sherds also picked up on surface. Cut red deer antler in one pit. (S1) erroneously mentions human skeletons.

Context 1. Fieldwalking 'a few years ago' (pre 1989) and August 1989. Area of site extended around original findspot to north and south of road. Large amounts of Nar Valley Ware including some overfired (not seen), also seven firebar fragments (seen).
