Originally the lighthouse at this position would have been a wooden framework surmounted by a fire. By 1852 there was a permanent navigation aid in the form of a light on a pier-head. The present lighthouse was built in 1887 from red brick, was originally powered by mains gas and is 69 feet tall. It was restored in 1957 after as it was believed to be becoming unstable. The structure proved sound but the port authority had it restored anyway.
