Summary

A polished flint axehead was found on the surface in about 1980, and a Roman quern was recovered from the dredgings of the river.

1981 or before. Stray Find.
Surface find, within 18m (20yds) of river:
1 Neolithic flint axe, polished and later rechipped. Flaring sides, rounded butt and cutting edge, of pointed oval transverse section. Apparently once all over polished, apart from some deeper flake scars on body of implement. Subsequent flaking, concentrated at butt and cutting edge, cuts through polish.
Darkish, black/brown staining as if from peat. See drawing (S1) and photograph (S2).
