Summary

In 1961 a moated site overgrown with trees was reported at this location. However, a visit to the site in 1980 found that the moated feature was in fact a deep pit, known as Pithole, with the trees growing at the bottom of it. However, no date was assigned to the pit.

Map

1961. Moated site claimed in same field as Crabbs Castle.
Heavily overgrown with trees fifty to one hundred years old, and brushwood.
Section drawing in file.

13 May 1980. Visited by E. Rose (NAU).
Does not appear to be moated site at all but a very deep pit. Farmer says this has always been known as the Pithole the brushwood has been cleared but the trees growing from the bottom are indeed fifty to one hundred years old.
Informant must have stood outside the wood and looking at the tops of the trees at feet level, thought they were the central island, and based his section drawing on the outer lip only!
E. Rose (NAU).

2000. Field Observation and Desk-based Assessment.
Site visited and considered as part of archaeological assessment of Holkham Estate.
Overgrown pit. No further details noted.
See report (S1).
