Full Description
1983. Metal detecting and fieldwalking.
Sherd with red surface and grey core, strong curve and traces of point.
Identified by S. Margeson (NCM) as cresset lamp to rest in stand or stick in ground. Medieval.
Within this, states finder, were found:
Ring, finger; silver, 4th century with mark of soldered plate on bezel, (S1).
Identified by C. Johns (Department of Prehistoric and Romano British Antiquities, British Museum).
Two pins: British Museum, Museum of Mankind and V&A all say 19th century hatpins, not silver.
In same area, but separate finds, were:
Pin, silver with perforated head, thin tiny crescent attached to head by wire loop through perforation. Roman or Middle Saxon? S. Margeson (NCM) says more probably Middle Saxon. See (S2).
Two pins, both probably 8th century AD - one copper alloy, one silver facetted heads, length 3cm (bent) and 2cm. Identified by S. Margeson (NCM).
Silver wire fragment, part of fastener?, less than 1cm long. Undated. Objects seen KLM etc 1985.

Apparently found at same time as other objects but not brought to KLM until a couple of days after others (12 December
1983).
Roman stud, oval, 4cm by 2.2cm. Silvered copper alloy. For attachment to leather, probably harness. Square sectioned pin in centre, blunt ended.
