Summary

Two Bronze Age socketed copper alloy plain axes were found when a dyke was recut. Later a Bronze Age unlooped palstave with trident decoration was ploughed up near the site. The two socketed axeheads are of similar date so these may be part of a Bronze Age hoard.

Location

Map sheet TL69NW
Civil Parish HILGAY, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Around 1964 to 1966.
Two socketed bronze plain axes ploughed up not far from each other. Seen KLM 10 July 1978.
See (S2, S3 and S4) in the Illustration Library.
S. Ashley (NAU).

1979.
Further information from S. Ashley (NAU) states not ploughed up but found in recutting dyke.

July 1979. Ploughed up (certain, this time). 'Next to where (above finds) found'.
Unlooped palstave with trident decoration.
Unlikely that all three objects form a hoard as the palstave is probably too early for a contemporary date with socketed axes.
See (S1) and (S5).
A. Lawson (NAU), 5 September 1979.

January 2008.
The two socketed axeheads from this site almost certainly are part of a hoard.
See (S1).
S. Ashley (NLA), 9 January 2008.
