Summary

Nos 5 to 15 are all early 19th century weavers' cottages, and had large weaving loft windows under their eaves. These have now been bricked in and replaced with smaller windows. Although tall, all the buildings are of two storeys, except for No.15 which has three. No. 3 is the old King's Head Inn, which had a 19th century shaped gable until renovation in 1982 removed this. No. 15 is now two houses, which have some nice ironwork (for example the gateposts) by Boulton and Paul. An Independent chapel is said locally to have stood on the site.

Map

30 March 1977.Visited.
Nos.5-15 are early 19th century weavers' cottages, tall, but only 2 storeys. Large weaving-loft windows under eaves now bricked up and replaced by smaller ones. Small ground floor windows and doors.
No.15 slightly different, 3 storeys but same height, centre storey windows being round-headed.
No.3 is Old King's Head Inn; it has a shaped gable of 19th century brick against No.5. Was it rebuilt when the weavers' houses were added on? Poor condition.
E. Rose (NAU).

The shaped gable regrettably was destroyed in renovating No.3 in 1982. The exterior of No.3 is now featureless.
E. Rose (NAU) 18 June 1982.

Brickwork of No.15, listed as nos 13 and 15, is early 19th century - note fine ironwork gateposts, porch brackets, bootscraper etc. Embossed Boulton and Paul Norwich. It is divided into two houses, architecturally one, some windows blocked in black brick. But rear wall of this house, now fossilised inside a late 19th century stair turret (wrongly called 17th century 'porch' by [1]) seems of older brickwork, 17th century? (but whitewashed). Perhaps one wall of older house.
Independent Chapel said locally to have stood on site.
E. Rose (NAU) 23 August 1982.
