Summary

An undated earthwork bank with an external ditch was observed on Overa Heath adjacent to Little Fen. After ploughing in 1954 no sign of the earthwork was visible. However, aerial photographs do show a sub-circular enclosure, banked with an outer ditch slightly to the northwest of the vanished feature.

August 2012. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TL 9927 8778 to TL 9923 8780.
The enclosure described above is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TL 9923 8780. It lies in an area of known prehistoric activity; two Bronze Age round barrows (NHER 57426 and 57427) lie only 130m to its north. However, later activity, including evidence of possible settlement in the Iron Age (NHER 54940) and possible agricultural activity in the medieval to post medieval period (NHER 57424) has also been recorded in the area.
The enclosure has an irregular, trapezoidal plan, the ditched element measuring approximately 62m by 56m externally. There are no obvious entrances, although there are two large potential breaks along the ditch circuit, including a substantial gap in its north side where the cropmark is masked by geological marks, and on the southern edge where it has been interrupted by quarrying, depicted on the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition map (S5). The inner bank, however, appears uninterrupted, and encloses an area measuring approximately 46m by 42m. In the centre of this enclosed area, it is possible to discern two further raised banks, which may represent internal divisions, although it is difficult to ascertain whether these are natural undulations or man-made features.
This enclosure is therefore possibly related to the Bronze Age round barrows to the north, although in the same way as a similar enclosure recorded near Markshall henge (NHER 15769), which incidentally exhibits similar dimensions and morphology, its function and date are unclear.
E. Bales (NMP), 29 August 2012.
