The site of undated and multi-period cropmarks that is visible on aerial photographs (S4-S12, S14-S16) to the north of Markshall Farm and along the line of the Southern Bypass, Caistor St Edmund. See record NHER 9584 and (S17) for details of excavations within this area in 1991, which revealed evidence of Neolithic pits, a possible Saxon grave, medieval and post medieval ditches and pits and a number of unphased pits and ditches. More coherent groups of cropmarks within the area of this site have been recorded separately, including components of a barrow cemetery (NHER 51966), a number of possible barrows or ring ditches (NHER 52319-21), a possible Roman enclosure and/or farmstead and fields (NHER 52327), and medieval to post medieval boundaries and fields (NHER 52326), see these records for detailed descriptions of the cropmarks in this area. This site is centred on TG 2319 0466 and relates only to the fragments that are the remaining unphased and undated components of this complex cropmark landscape. The majority of these features are fragmentary former field boundaries and ditches. The only feature of any note is a small possible rectilinear enclosure at TG 2333 0470 (S13), measuring 11m by 5m. It must be noted that the aerial photographs of this site also exhibited high levels of non-archaeological cropmarks, which were omitted from the mapping where their natural origin was obvious. However, given the complexity and prevalence of these marks, it is feasible that some of the more irregular fragmentary ditch-like cropmarks mapped, could also be of a non-archaeological origin.
S. Horlock (NMP), 23 November 2009.
