Full Description
June 1978. Visit.
Former Church School of 1840 (plaque on gable) now Anglia Antiques. Original schoolroom in red brick 'Tudor' style with four bay windows to road and central porch. Overgrown playground with outbuildings. To northeast contemporary schoolmaster's house in same style with finials and four clustered chimneys. Later extensions produce an H shape.
See (S1).
E. Rose (NAU), 27 June 1978.
Rear, parallel block of flint construction below brick. Compare with drawing of 1841 in (S2). This shows only two bay windows to facade, with stepped gables and windows like those still remaining on end bays; so bay windows each
side of porch later, and windows and gables of outer bay windows altered. Central bell cupola also shown and tall finial on northeast gable of which only base remains. The rear range is stated to be later. Permission to demolish granted 1986.
E. Rose (NAU), 15 October 1986.
This was known as the National Church School but presumably cannot be the same as the National School which Rev. Armstrong noted on the 7th September 1870 that the new classrooms and a masters residence had been completed, as the present house is clearly visible in the 1841 print.
Information from (S3).
E. Rose (NLA), 9 September 1997.
However the 'other' school in the town, in London Road, was a British School not a National School. So could the answer be something like that the 1841 house by his school was a headmaster's residence, and a separate master's residence was built? But if so, where?
E. Rose (NLA), 15 September 1997.
The school building was demolished in 1986-7 and replaced by housing.
Permission was granted in 2007 to demolish the adjacent teacher’s house as well, but instead a new extension in sympathetic style has been built on the north side.
E. Rose (NLA), 10 April 2007.
