Full Description
21 July 1983, 27 July 1986, 12 July 1990. NAU aerial photographs.
Positive cropmarks.
Linear cropmarks, enclosure.
D. A. Edwards (NAU) 13 September 1985.
Note that enclosure pre-dates wood in north corner of field shown on 6in Ordnance Survey, now removed as shown on aerial photograph.
E. Rose (NAU) 20 September 1985.
20 July 1989. NAU air photography greatly extends area, taking in sites NHER 8902, 28407, 13500.
The features include a large sub-circular enclosure. D. Edwards suggests this may have been a park feature but
the 1st edition 1in Ordnance Survey confirms the historic parks register in saying that this area was always outside the park. No tree clump marked here in 1838. Taken with earlier evidence these are probably pre-park features.
E. Rose (NLA) 7 August 1995.
29 June 1993. NLA air photography.
Large sub-circular enclosure showing clearly, also several stretches of linears.
To the northwest of the large sub-circular enclosure is a faint cropmark which may represent an oval enclosure with an entrance to the northwest.
S. Massey (NLA) 30 January 2001.
July 2006. Vertical Aerial Photograph.
Cropmarks are visible on Google Earth imagery. This includes linear features and a possible enclosure.
See (S1) for further details.
D. Lefeuvre (HES), 14 February 2011.
September 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The monument polygon has been altered as a result of the NMP mapping, the centroid has been changed from TG 0914 0386 to TG 0908 0380.
A sub-circular enclosure and possible associated features, as described above, are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S4). The enclosure measures up to 104m by 86m and is considered to possibly date to the prehistoric period.
At some point there may have been entrance to the enclosure at TG 0912 0380, perhaps defined by swollen terminals, but this is not visible on all the photographs, and the enclosure ditch also definitely continues on some, so it is difficult to be certain.
At least two possible ponds have been mapped as extents of area, centred on TG 0894 0371 and TG 0907 0382. These ponds are clearest on (S4) but are also apparent on the earlier aerial photographs. Their correlation with the enclosure ditch suggests that they are possibly related. A seeming break in the enclosure ditch circuit may be coincidence.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 27 September 2012.
