Summary

In 1976 a Palaeolithic handaxe was found in a garden here. It has been noted that this location is relatively close to a residence where a collection of Thames Valley handaxes was seen in the 1950s. There is however no reason to believe that this particular handaxe is a modern loss.

Map

1976. Stray Find.
Found by [1] in garden:
1 Palaeolithic ovate flint handaxe. See drawing (S1) and site location plan in file.
Information from (S2).
This handaxe is noted on (S3) and in (S4) but no additional information is given.

It is known that during the 1950s a resident in this area had a number of handaxes from the Thames Valley (NHER 12427), though there is no reason to believe that this object is a modern loss from that collection.

According to (S2) a King's Lynn Museum 6" record map (S5) marked a Palaeolithic handaxe as being found at TF 6761 4185, this information being via [2]. R. Trett (KLM) believes this is a mistake for this find, as there is a note of a drawing at KLM, which could only fit this find.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 18 December 2013.
