Full Description
'In a house in the Market Place'.
1909 wallpaintings found.
Rediscovered 1959 during which period fifteen layers of wallpaper had been put on top.
Originally in 1909 they had been found under panelling, on the first floor. Mr Hawcroft (NCM) identified them as early 19th century, the work of 'a gifted amateur but of little artistic significance' however they were 'the only ones of their kind' and 'a copy of the Norwich school'.
Information from NCM Bolingbroke Collection.
NCM Art Department have no record of this. When town visited by E. Rose February 1980 nobody questioned could say which house it was. Some of the Market Place has been demolished since 1959.
The exact reference in Bolingbroke Collection is (S1) and (S2). The paintings consisted of: two landscapes, two coastal scenes, one ship at sea, one illegible.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 17 November 1983.
