Summary

A rectilinear pit, visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs and as a low earthwork on visualised lidar data, probably relates to post medieval extraction of marl or other material. Originally interpreted as the possible site of a building, during a site visit in 1978 the landowner stated that it was an infilled pit. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2018), it is probable that the earthwork still survives.

Map

Just south of sudden narrowing in railway cutting.
Soilmark of building, forming hollow square with small extension to west and larger one to south.
Aerial photographs checked by E. Rose (NAU), 30 November 1976.

Field under crop when visited by P. Wade-Martins (NAU) in september 1978, but informant told him this was an infilled pit.
This seems strange to writer from the shape.

The rectilinear ‘soilmark’ (it is not entirely clear but may be instead be a cropmark) described above is visible on many of the consulted aerial photographs (such as S1-S2). It is also visible as a low earthwork on visualised lidar data (S3). Although rather unusual in plan, it is most likely to be a former extraction pit (as suggested above) rather than the footprint of a building. It is probably of post medieval date and may have been dug to extract marl or similar material. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2018), it is probable that the earthwork still survives.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 22 October 2025.
