Summary

Fragments of 13th to 16th century pottery (including imported wares) and pieces of leather, bone, brick and tile were recovered when two shafts and an interconnecting tunnel were sunk to build a new Town Hall Pumping Station. The finds are probably rubbish discarded on the beach from ships before the river wall was constructed.

1980 to 1981. Excavation of vertical shafts with interconnecting tunnels by contractors for new pumping station. Edge of Hall Quay.
Material recovered from area between 45m and 125m south of Haven Bridge and between 5m and 15m east of river wall. Depths of recovery uncertain as most of finds are from dumps at Cobholm Island. Material reported as coming from 'upper clay.' Samples taken by P. Murphy (UEA) at junction of upper clay and underlying sandy gravel. Material probably rubbish discarded on a beach from ships, before river wall was constructed. Finds mainly pottery 13th to 16th century including local and imported wares. Leather, bone, brick and tile, etc.
Site investigated by J. Read (GYM), P. Murphy (UEA), W. Milligan (NCM) and A. Rogerson (NLA).
Also some material from shaft 1 recovered.
Pottery identified by W. Milligan (NCM) and S. Jennings (Norwich Survey).
