Full Description
The cropmarks formerly recorded under this number are now within NHER 49468 for the Roman settlement and fields and NHER 49467 for those of a medieval to post medieval date.
1976. East and north of Manor Farm.
Cropmarks of unusual irregular and rectangular enclosures, some with short tracks issuing, askew to modern field boundaries and passing under road. Linear marks (possibly drainage channels) running to stream to north.

Footings for bungalow dug out at Context 3 (location [1]).
Partly concreted when visited; no features or finds.

16th century records mark fields just east of present Manor Farm and south of road as the Hall; buildings implied, but by 17th century maps these have gone, site called Hall Yards. Information from member of the public [2].

1995. Metal detector finds over cropmarks north of School Lane and extended to west - additional area called Context 2.

Early Saxon small long brooch head plate and bow (winged lip).
Medieval belt mount two plates with ogee opening at each end and circular hole in centre.
Medieval brooch or buckle pin, 14th century.
Early post medieval book clasp(?).

1995. Metal detector finds.
Medieval ring brooch, flat ring with narrow bar over which pin and moulded collar is looped. Gilded decoration with engraved quatrefoils and ?inscription, very worn.
Medieval strap end buckle with integral tapering plate and looped pin.
Medieval circular harness pendant with central hole for boss. Decorated with elongated lozenges. The lozenges are decorated with rocker arm ornament and traces of gilding survive.

19-20 April 1999. Trial Trenching. Contexts to 23.
Evaluation in advance of housing revealed medieval wall, ditch backfilled with medieval/post-medieval building material and forming part of the cropmark; interesting medieval pottery assemblage, one Late Saxon sherd; animal bone. Also a prehistoric worked flint.

H. M. Geake (NCM) identified:
Suspension device for a censer (incense swinger used in Catholic churches). It has a tall stalk with a suspension loop at the top and three arms at the base. Two arms are largely missing, but the third ends in an expanded pierced terminal. Charms would have hung from the terminals and held the censer. Underneath the central stalk is another suspension loop. A similar one was found when the church at Guestwick was excavated in 1982-1983 (fig 50, EAA 32). Medieval.
