NHER 19640 (Monument record) - Early Saxon cremations and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1982 and 2017 recovered prehistoric worked flints; undated, Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval roof tile fragment; a Roman coin; a medieval coin hoard; a medieval/post-medieval token and undated and Early Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated metalworking debris; a number of Early Saxon brooches and a sleeve clasp; a Middle/Late Saxon hooked tag; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval needle and book clasp; a medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel foot and leg; and a post-medieval silver cuff link. The number of Early Saxon brooches and pottery fragments found on this site suggests that the Early Saxon cremation cemetery, NHER 3781, extends into this area.

Full Description

1982. Astride parish boundary, scattered over area about 150m across. Found on surface of ploughed field.
'Sixty to seventy sherds of Ipswich Ware and one sherd of bossed urn'.
Note that these have not been seen at NAU or NCM and the identification is unconfirmed.

22 March 1985. Fieldwalking. Full north to south width of field, 50m west of east hedge walked under medium conditions, winter cereal.
One sherd Roman greyware?, one sherd undated, two sherds medieval unglazed, two sherds glazed Grimston, one sherd non-glazed Grimston.
Manure scatter, no concentrations.
No Ipswich ware found.
