NHER 13108 (Building record) - The Mere

Referred to in a 19th century guide to Mannington Hall in (S1) as 'a second moated house in this parish'.

May 1978. Visit.
The farmhouse follows vaguely a 17th century plan but is entirely 19th century. The Mere itself is a large pond, not a moat. An older house may have been destroyed, but this guidebook is often inaccurate. (S2) predating (S1) shows the Mere and house as now, house marked as 'farm'. Therefore almost certain that there was no moat here.

However (S3) describes house as 17th century altered and enlarged 19th century. Course brick and flint mosaic. Single range, four bays, two storeys and attic. Projecting porch on second bay. Top of doorway altered 19th century. Walls of porch incorporate some brick heart patterning at base. Two axial stacks of two shafts renewed. Left-hand gable raised; some decorative brickwork hearts. Single storey passage extension are rear. Interior has cast iron newel to staircase. Later 19th century extensions to right and rear.
