Summary

Inhumations of unknown date, Roman and medieval pottery, and the remains of a post medieval building were found when the foundations for a new building were excavated.

Map

12 November 1979. Building site immediately west of church site and south of east to west Roman road.
Trenches cut for foundations; 60cm topsoil.
Much human skeletal remains; mostly found on edges of trenches where left by contractors, but femora in situ indicated west to east burial. Landowner reported horse's skull found in grave, but not seen. Flint and mortar footings, at least one feature with post medieval brick, running east to west and north to south.
27 sherds Roman coarse ware including Shouldham ware, 4th century shell gritted waster or second sherd, imitation black burnished BB2 jar rim. Samian rim.
1 sherd glazed Grimston?, 1 medieval coarse, large number 18th century? sparse glazed flowerpot.
Owner reports 'lead dish found near burial' (pewter paten?).
