Full Description
November 1981. Field Observation.
This appears to be a landscape mound and is very similar to the one of about 1780 at Gunton Park.
It is heavily wooded.
Mr J. Gibbs, National Trust, suggested it was Elizabethan, but Mr Phipps, National Trust, says documentary evidence shows that the Elizabethan mount was elsewhere and that this one is probably 18th century. It now bears a water tower added about 1890 (this is now recorded under NHER 68251).
Information from HER Record Card (S2).
E. Rose (NAU), 19 November 1981. Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 19 March 2024.
September 1993. Documentary Research.
The Blicking Estate Guide (S4) confirms that the Elizabethan mount was the bastion now in the formal gardens east of the hall. This mount is of the early 18th century and had a spiral walk.
Information from HER data transfer form (S3).
E. Rose (NAU) 1 September 1993. Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 19 March 2024.
May 1998. Field Observation.
The spiral walk remains, or has been reinstated.
The mound has been much eroded and is covered with trees that hide the view.
E. Rose (NLA), 4 May 1998. Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 19 March 2024.
March 2023. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The earthworks of the previously recorded (see above) 18th century garden mount are seen on recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S6). As the feature is recorded in good detail on the consulted historic maps (S7 and S8), the feature has not been mapped as part of this project. The earthwork mount is clearly visible on recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S6) and most likely still survives as an earthwork. The monument polygon has been updated to the location of the feature as seen on the visualised lidar data [1].
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 31 March 2023.
