Full Description
Various prehistoric flints collected by J. J. Wymer during fieldwalking along the firestrip to the south of the railway line in the Broomhill area. The finds collected became part of Wymer's personal collection, which is now held by Royal Holloway, University of London.
In most cases these objects were not ascribed a particular date, although a number are clearly Mesolithic. The Mesolithic material is listed by (S1) as comprising 2 cores, 9 flakes/blades and 3 microliths. It appears that the Mesolithic pieces were clustered in the centre of area walked.
This record was previously mapped on the basis of the grid reference given by (S1) (TL 804 881). It is however clear from the sketch plans in Wymer's journals that these finds were recovered from south of the railway line.
17 July 1953. Fieldwalking.
Fieldwalking on the "..western slope of the fire strip beside the railway line at Broome Hill, Weeting" (probably this site):

Information from (S4).
P. Watkins (HES), 20 August 2014.
25 April 1954. Fieldwalking.
Various prehistoric flints recovered during unsystematic fieldwalking by J. J. Wymer, including:
2 Mesolithic microliths.
1 prehistoric borer, 1 flake knife, 2 scrapers and 1 retouched flake.
See notes, descriptions and sketch plan in (S2).
P. Watkins (HES), 22 May 2013.
20 May 1954. Fieldwalking.
Unsystematic fieldwalking by J. J. Wymer:
1 prehistoric flint flake, 9 blades and 1 scraper.
Found in the same area as the microlith found in April 1954.
See notes, descriptions and sketch plan in (S2).
P. Watkins (HES), 21 May 2013.
26 May 1954. Fieldwalking.
Unsystematic fieldwalking by J. J. Wymer:
1 Mesolithic microlith. Recovered in the same area as the blades and microliths found during the earlier visits. Information from (S2).
P. Watkins (HES), 21 May 2013.
2 September 1961. Fieldwalking.
Unsystematic fieldwalking by J. J. Wymer after the fire strips were ploughed:
1 prehistoric unfinished flint arrowhead, 1 arrowhead tip, 1 knife, 1 discoidal core, 1 fragmentary axe (butt) and 1 retouched flake with possible 'sickle gloss'.
See notes, descriptions and sketch plan in (S3).
P. Watkins (HES), 21 May 2013
3 September 1961. Fieldwalking.
Unsystematic fieldwalking by J. J. Wymer:
1 Mesolithic two-platform flint blade core.
1 prehistoric flint blade and 1 flake.
It appears that a number of other blades were also found but not retained. The flints were noted as being predominantly of brown-coloured flint.
See notes, descriptions and sketch plan in (S3).
P. Watkins (HES), 21 May 2013
