Summary

The cropmark of a possible curvilinear bank, perhaps relating to a post medieval boundary, is visible on an aerial photograph of this area that was taken in 1979. It continues the boundary of a 19th century woodland although it could have an earlier origin.

A cropmark of a possible curvilinear bank perhaps relating to a post medieval boundary is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). This cropmark is centred on TG 3070 1381. A possible curvilinear bank cropmark is visible for 212m on a roughly southwest to northeast alignment. Although this feature has a similar appearance to geological cropmarks visible on (S1), it appears to continue a field and woodland boundary that extends for 465m to its southwest. This area formed part of Mousehold Heath on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S3) and the woodland was not present at that date. The name of the woodland, ‘Eleven Acre Plantation’, suggests that it is of post medieval origin and it is first shown on the 1841 Salhouse Tithe Map (S4). It is possible that the boundary is contemporary with the woodland and dates from the early 19th century. Alternatively it may relate to an earlier undated boundary feature. Two parallel ditch cropmarks have previously been recorded on a similar southwest to northeast alignment. However, it is likely that these and other linear cropmarks visible on (S1) relate to modern land drains.
J. Albone (NMP) 9 October 2006.
