Summary

This early 18th century brick house adjoins a 19th century shop. The house has two storeys with an attic but is very tall. The pitch of the roof suggests it may once have been thatched. Part of the 18th century house was probably demolished when the shop side extension was built.

1 February 1978. Visit. House (numbered 2 but no street name).
Remarkable building: two storeyed but very tall with high gable suggesting formerly thatched.
Chequered brickwork, 17th century, string course, but all original windows blocked and recut.
At east end north side (apparently principal front) a sort of square tower to eaves height, in same brickwork but not a porch.
19th century gothicky butcher's shop to east added on masks building.

(S1) names as Sycamore House and Butchers Shop, Church Plain.
Dates to early 18th century and says the tower is a contemporary stair outshut.
Shop is mid 19th century and represents part demolition of original building. No interior details given.
