Summary

Fieldwalking in 1983 by the Fenland Survey recovered a number of medieval pottery sherds from across this area. A concentration of medieval pottery sherds was also noted, along with animal bone and shell fragments, fired clay and post medieval debris. All this material was recovered from a raised mound up, which is not a roddon. Another concentration of medieval and post medieval pottery sherds, bone and fired clay fragments as also noted on flat ground.

Map

23 November 1983. Fenland fieldwalking. Field of moderate condition, rough ploughed but well weathered on west side (majority of context 1 finds), east side under winter wheat, reasonably weathered.
Context 1: general scatter, medieval sherds. WPP BA (S1).
Context 2: at 4987 1371 sparse concentration medieval pottery, centre point lies on south side overall spread and seems to be no more than 15m diameter. However, material spreads to north and east but only occasional sherds located (better conditions might reveal more). Sparse animal bone across area, occasional oyster shell, some post medieval sherds. Abundant fragments fired clay and on north edge close to Faulkner House great deal of post medieval debris. Odd bits slag. All material on raised mound up to three feet higher than surrounding area, also supports Faulkner House. Artificial creation around roddon system (?). Not a roddon on its own. WPP 20 (S2).
Context 3: at 4998 1356 concentration of medieval pottery with moderate amount fired clay, and very sparse post medieval pottery and bone. Not on obvious roddon, rather on flat ground. 63m northwest-southeast x 35m. WPP 21 (S3).
For full details of wares, flint types etc see Fenland Folders (S4).
R. Silvester (NAU), 23 November 1983.
