Summary

In 1979 metal-detecting of an area stripped of topsoil recovered a medieval strap end and a post-medieval copper alloy leather-working punch. Despite further investigations in this area no further finds or features were identified. It appears that a Mesolithic tranchet axehead had previously been found at this location, although the date of this discovery is not known.

26 June 1979. Metal-detecting.
Clover Hill, Bowthorpe, approximately 100m southeast of Sainsbury's. Found with metal detector in area stripped of topsoil for building new houses:
1 medieval copper alloy buckle.
1 post-medieval copper alloy punch for applying leaf-motif, probably a leather-working tool. Held by NCM.
S. Margeson (NCM) says the buckle is really a strap-end and that finder has retained possession at least temporarily.

A Mesolithic tranchet axehead found by J. E. Sainty in "Bowthorpe" is described in (S1). The grid reference recorded indicates that it was found at this site (TG 180 092 listed as "accurate"), although the date of discovery is not given. This object was formerly in the possession of R. Jacobi and although it is noted that it was given to the Noriwch Castle Museum, it does not appear in the museum's records.
