Summary

Since 1949 objects have been recovered from this area, which is located within a extensive Late Iron Age to Roman settlement (NHER 26626). Excavation took place in 1950, uncovering a number of rubbish pits filled with pottery sherds and oyster shells, and in 1952 around one of the areas where quantities of firebars and briquetage had been recovered. This recorded the presence of a possible pottery kiln. Since this time, metal detecting has retrieved brooches, a number of coins, metal objects and metal working debris, all supporting the theory of a Roman settlement in this area. Neolithic axeheads, the back of an Early Saxon brooch and a number of medieval and post medieval objects have also been found.
