Summary

Fieldwalking in 1984 by the Fenland Survey recovered a general scatter of medieval pottery sherds from this field. Two concentrations of medieval objects, including pottery sherds, slag, bone and shell fragments, were also noted, as well as evidence of a medium roddon on the north side adjacent to the dyke.

14 February 1984. Well weathered soil with young winter wheat.
Context 1: general scatter medieval sherds. (S1).
Context 2: at 5151 1720. Sparse scatter medieval pottery, also some post medieval material including fired clay/brick fragments. Moderate amounts slag, sparse glass. Very sparse animal bone and lot of pectan shells. Shells, bone and slag could be medieval. On south side medium roddon up to 1m high on north side adajcent to dyke. 24m x 15m. (S2).
Context 3: at 5154 1729. Sparse to moderate scatter including some large chunks, reflection of fact this was orchard until few years ago. Large number pectan shells with few oysters provide guide to site, moderate amount bone noted particularly to north end site. Very sparse post medieval pottery and fired clay and moderate amounts slag. On top and particularly east side medium roddon. 50 x 35m. (S3).
