Full Description
Before June 1971. Casual observation by reliable local archaeologist at 21/22 Broad Street.
Shallow excavation around closely spaced driven piles revealed an extensive area of hearths. At least 15 hearths were exposed in a 6.1m (20 feet) square area, each 1.2m to 1.8m (4 to 6 feet) in diameter. These had frequently been replaced, or made up, to give a total depth of burning of about 0.6m (2 feet). A large part of a decorated Grimston jug (type in (S1)) was found beneath the hearths. These probably represent the bases of cloth-dyeing or brewing vats, but their form was unfortunately not clearly established.
See (S1).
A. Carter (UEA).
This site, although named 21-23 Broad Street appears in this position on the paper NHER map, and so has been drawn at this site.
M. Horlock (NLA), 15 July 2003.
