Full Description
Georgian, 2 storeys, 6 bays with central pedimented door, and dentilled cornice. One bay unframed pediment with simple window. On each side slightly recessed pavilions of three bays, two storeys, with pyramid roofs; eastern one has pediment to south. (S1) mentioned a barn with shaped gables on west, but this is not there now. Now used as
antique shop.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU) 9 November 1978.
June 1998.
Building now under different ownership; private house.
The side pavilions mentioned are 19th century additions to the original, with bricks with horizontal skintlings. However the owners state that the main north facade is not brick at all, but mathematical tiles painted over. The easternmost bay of the eastern pavilion has a north window made to resemble the others although it lights only a garden store room. East of this pavilion is a range of 19th century brick outbuildings to north, a greenhouse to south. The latter has iron-framed roof with sub-Lombardic detail and a clerestory of louvres. Beneath are stoke rooms. An apsidal wall to the east is 19th/20th century. However the wall dividing green house from outbuildings, 19th century at west end, at the east is English bond late 17th or early 18th century, no skintlings. Remnant of an earlier garden wall or shed? Present tall garden wall to east has diagonal skintlings.
Plan and photographs of greenhouse in file.
E. Rose (NLA) 26 June 1998.
