Summary

In 1977 a large number of Roman ditches and pits were discovered at this location. These pits contained Roman first century pottery sherds including some belonging to butt-beakers. In 1981 part of large combed storage jar, dating to around AD 40-50, was also recovered from the same site.

1977. On lands of Abbey Farm, seen in sides of newly recut dykes.
Large numbers of ditches and pits.
Several contained Roman 1st century sherds including butt-beakers. Natural was sand and clay, and in places between this and topsoil a brown peaty-clay layer appeared; this formed the lowest fill in some ditches, but in others overran the fill.

Of 1977 finds, [1] gave to KLM a fragment butt-beaker with rouletted pattern of parallel lines, base diameter 7cm; and part of biconical bowl, fragment of rim of large storage jar, part of rim of small vase in black fabric with light brown burnish.
KLM card 24 March 1978 passed to NAU by NCM February 1982.
Seventeen more Early Roman combed coarse storage jar sherds given to KLM in 1988.
