NHER 16180 (Monument record) - Demolished barn at Catchett's Farm

30 May 1980. Visited by E. Rose.
Very fine barn of around 1780.
Red brick, with odd black ones. Large and long. Double dentilled cornice. Brick grille windows on upper level. East gable has two string courses, similar grilles and rounded brick niche. West gable as well as grilles has later? door, very high, indicating a loft at this end? but no traces within. 'T C' (for Thomas Cook?) in clampirons here. Excellent roof of tiebeams on arched braces rising from wallposts on carved wooden corbels. Also a higher order of tiebeams. Windbracing very slightly curved. Many rafters replaced. Tile roof. Northwest section of roof raised on higher wall at later date to cover a cow shed on north, probably added at same date as stockyard to west and cottage on east which covers the gable string courses - probably about 1820. The cottage has been extended again since, and the present farm house is of 1902.
Condition gives rise for concern - large cracks in walls. For sale at time of visit.
In gravel path by south wall a worked flint flake, grey, found.

According to informant this was demolished in 1981.
The arched braces etc were sold off, and one was found to have a name and the date 1727. This is fifty years older than the date at which E. Rose (NAU) placed it before but is not unreasonable for the style.
