Full Description
'Earthworks' claimed on St. Joseph's list of air photographs at this very approximate grid reference.
Winter 1981-2. Fieldwalking.
In fields to west and south of farm. Context 1. Found on surface of ploughed field. Ipswich Ware rim sherd, various sherds medieval to 16th to 17th century. See [1].
Comp. A. Gregory (NAU) 12 October 1982.
1997. Fieldwalking.
Field south-east of Moat Farm (Context 2) has a north-west to south-east meandering, often water-filled, drain that is a common edge ditch, and to which the moat at the adjacent farm may well have linked. Slight depressions to south-west of this suggest possible subdivision into sub-rectangular enclosures, but recent infill of spoil from the moat has almost obliterated their shape and form. Post medieval bottles, tile fragments etc noted in spoil along with five pottery sherds: one base and four body sherds medieval unglazed.
Ident D.Gurney (NLA)
Comp. B.Cushion (NLA) July 1997.
April 2000. Visit.
Pond remains to south east of Moat Farm house, this dredged some years ago and material spread over adjoining field, filling linear depression. This now seen as darker grass running north east to south west to linear pond to north east. This feature some 2-3m wide. At its terminus to east a depression runs to hedge line. Owner says this is known locally to be the Common Ditch. Earthworks now minimal after infilling.
Comp. H. Paterson, 12 April 2000.
November 2025. HER Enhancement: Forestry Commission Project K.
Earthworks of the possible medieval moat and common edge boundary are visible on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2022 (S1). Two hollows are also visible on the visualised lidar data centred at TM 2636 8759. The date and function of these features is unknown but may relate to post medieval extraction.
