Map

House now divided into two.
Largely 17th century with façade of about 1800 to street and evidence of about 1600 to rear.
Flint and brick to west, clunch to east, brick street façade T plan with range along street of 2 or three builds, and wing at right angles to south of 3 builds about 1600, with one blocked ovolo moulded brick mullioned window.
18th century end bay added.
One 'long low' window on upper floor to west and another blocked.
Ridge stack is former end stack of about 1600 build.
Street range has 4 blocked windows and blocked hood moulded attic opening in west gable.
In older (rear) wing are three ground floor ovolo moulded and end stopped traverse beams.
See (S1) which gives property as 'Old Crabbe Hall and Hamilton House', but present owners told E. Rose (NAU) who located property on 25 October 1984 that in fact Hamilton House was the older name of the property, renamed Old Crabbe Hall recently.
They mentioned 'cruck like beams in the roof' not apparently seen by listing reviser.
E. Rose (NAU) 1 November 1984

The property is in fact split into three sections, Old Crabbe hall having the rear wing, Middle Cottage and Hamilton Cottage projecting along the street to the east.
The street façade is in two builds, with a vertical join where the taller roof of Old Crabbe Hall drops; but both sides of the join are of 19th century bricks. The third build mentioned in the Listing is an infilled shop window. Hamilton Cottage alone inspected; east gable wall of clunch rebuilt in recent years. Building of two cells, one of which overlaps the rear wing. The ground floor western room has a north-south beam with abrupt stops at north end alone, near to the west wall and in line with the east wall of the rear wing. To the east is a beam across the stack with tongue stop at north end alone, but a beam on the other side of the stack has such stops at both ends. The staircase is 20th century. In the east wall is a very fine ovolo moulded and stopped doorframe of 17th century date. At first floor little is visible; the west cell has a boxed beam; no beam is visible east of the stack; but there is a post at the north end of the beam west of the stack, with late studwork below. In the south wall is a blocked window.
These details confirm that the eastward projection along the street is part of the 17th century work, only recased in the 18th/19th century.
