Summary

Two undated banks and a possible trench have been recorded close to an area known as 'Blood Dale'. Local legend tells that the placename derives from a battle that took place in Drayton. It has been suggested that the features could be military and may have been associated with the battle. However, they could equally be the remains of a hollow way. However assessment of the aerial photographs for this site suggested that well-defined earthworks did not particularly have the appearance of being of any great antiquity. Additionally the 1839 Drayton Tithe Map and the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 -1891, 6 inch) did not reveal any trace of the route.

Map

'In wood near to Blood Dale'. Remains of entrenchment.
The Dale is said to get its name from a battle.
Information from (S1).

This most probably refers to the hollow way which runs from Fakenham Road to Low Road, having a bank on both sides which makes the hill resemble a hillfort from the south.
E. Rose (NAU), 27 April 1978.

See also NHER 7853 for possible derivation of name - note Bloods Dale on Ordance Survey map (S2).

August 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Assessment of the aerial photographs for this site revealed relatively neat well-defined earthwork banks to either side of a semi-sunken path (S3). These features did not particularly have the appearance of being of any great antiquity. Additionally the 1839 Drayton Tithe Map (S4) and the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 -1891, 6 inch) (S5) did not reveal any trace of the route. It was therefore decided that the earthworks must be relatively modern in date.
S. Horlock (NMP), 31 August 2010.
