Summary

No 15 is thought to be an 18th century house, probably constructed of brick. Some exposed timber-framing can be seen in the passage, probably also dating to the 18th century. It appears that this passage has been cut through an existing house that extended both left and right on the line of a wall.

Map

July 1972. Listed, Grade II.

February 1980. Field Observation.
No 15 Damgate Street visited by E. Rose (NAU).
Timber-framed (17th century?) house, clad in brickwork 18th/19th century. In wall of passage timber framing exposed, and large beam with holes for uprights in ceiling.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 13 February 1980. Information from record card (S1).

However 1994 revised listing (S2) sees this as an 18th-century brick house, with the timber framing of the passage belonging to a removed building to the south, and the timber in the roof of the passage as reused.
Compiled by E. Rose 11 May 1994.

April 1997. Field Observation.
The passage (alone) was reinspected 17 April 1997. The listing conclusions seem hard to sustain. The south wall of the passage is of late framing with V-bracing, probably 18th century; the timber in the ceiling with the stud mortises seems to have joists attached to each side. It certainly seems as if the passage has been cut through an existing house that extended both left and right, on the line of a wall, and that the south wall was made at this time.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 23 April 1997.
